The discussion is very interesting indeed, but I think that “real world” is difficult to be achieved and someone to test all these equipments, so to decide what is the best for him. GT is a way for someone to hear what the operator hears. SDRs offer the ability to record and share with others IF records of various bandwidth (96KHz to 1600KHz in case of PERSEUS SDR), WebSDR site (
http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/ ) can offer real time SDR but in narrow bandwidth etc. If you a curious to hear what PERSEUS SDR is receiving (under my working conditions) you can use the link:
http://www.4shared.com/dir/17028419/51c17437/SDR_Radio.html (look at folder SDR Records). The files are .wav but you must use Winrad (
http://www.4shared.com/file/114417477/16716879/Winrad142_setup.html) to feed them (not windows media player!!!).
I think that SDR is the future. In our days Flex, Perseus, ADAT-ADT200A, SDR-IQ, QuickSilver, SoftRock and some more, offer very interesting solutions.

FLEX-1500 SDR, NEW TOY !
Full SDR Receive (10 kHz -60MHz) + Transmit (160-6m)up to 5W, USB, LSB, DSB, CW-L, CW-U, AM, SAM, DRM, DIGI-U, DIGI-L, FM (narrow), 48 kHz panadaptor,
Only US $579, projected price in the UK about £ 695, this makes it a serious competitor to receive only SDR devices (e.g. Perseus, RF-Space, etc) and a challenge to the big 3 Japanese manufacturers.
No soundcard needed, just a USB cable to connect...and happy Xmas !

Sunday, 26-Dec-10 23:12:01 GMTSDR is great if you plan to only use one band at a time. Yes, it will support multiple users on the same band segment, or you can set up a full set of receivers with each tuned to your preferred series of band segments. You can also spend a TON of money on hardware and bandwidth.
SDR is not a pracical DC to Daylight multi user solution for shared radios just yet.
Even the big WebSdr sites feature only selected band segments.
The beauty of Global Tuners is that for the most part it is quality wideband receivers that can go just about anywhere you need. And we share them.

Monday, 27-Dec-10 01:40:48 GMTYou are very right, Ted nothing 100 % perfect..
And yes, the more radios we have the better,
but the better radios we have, even better.
Throw in a good antenna? We are the best! ;)
Better still, if we want the next generation to keep in touch with "radio", I would be happier to see Icom etc retire last century's ceramic filters of PCRs and at last develop massively produced cheap software filters, why so much delay?
Also, hopefully soon Icom etc will pull their boots up and come up with products appealing to kids, why not have a V/U radio for example that runs SKYPE as well?
Interestingly for DC-Light radios, prices not too different anymore, at least for performance radios:
An Icom R-9500's list price is in the range of $ 17 000,
Basic version of IZT R3240 is in the range of € 15 000
and they both get to 3GHz.
PS:
Personally I have shared 6 radios here on GT over the years:
-a DRM modified PCR-1000,
-a PCR-1500
-an R-8500
-an AOR AR-7030+
-a Perseus
-an FT-857D hooked to GT while driving around, which was the most fun of all.
