The French navy signal is really strong as I receive it clearly on my nodes (Montreal) is this encrypted?

What a BRILLIANT thread!!! Guys, well done, you!

As one who chases a lot of non-amateur digital modes on HF, I can guide you to at least one site that has a lot of information and links to other sites for help on some of the non-ham modes:
http://www.chace-ortiz.org/umc
Mike is an expert on modes and information when it comes to non-amateur 'noises' on the bands.

Also, there's another chat that deals with digital/utility/numbers stations; those with an irc client may want to point to StarChat (irc.starchat.net) and check out the rooms #monitor and #wunclub. Lots of info there, and you'll find a few of the regulars from GT chat there as well.

If anyone has questions about non-ham digital modes, and if I'm available on the chatroom, just give a shout, I'll assist as best I can.

One more thing: if you come across a user that is copying digital stuff, please be aware that sometimes the decoder panel covers up the local and global chat windows, and the user may be in the middle of receiving traffic, so they're not watching the chat windows like a hawk. Tuning the receiver away from the transmission may cause bursts of indignance (personal experience), so if the receiver sounds like noise, it does not mean that it's not in use.

Thanks again to all, this is really a must-read thread!

Brad

Yes, great thread Brad, educational dare I say, lots of input here by lots of good radio-folks, thanks for your input Brad, looking forward to reading/learning more and more! ;-)

Djado yes, that's fine, just happened to be online at that time, any luck I wonder, I wonder? :-)

Luc, according to some Google searching i did, unfortunately it's encrypted. Tried Sigmira (Freeware) and Skysweeper+(Registered copy), but of course no luck! For some uncomfortable reason this frequency, although not new, it is not mentioned in the expensive Klingenfuss guides. :(

If anyone has the patience to look stuff up, it seems to be the same modulation, waveform, etc as 4324 and similar to 4280 kHz USB.

However!

If anyone is interested in decoding STANAG, Sigmira will do it for free for you.

Download URL:

http://www.saharlow.com/technology/sigmira

Read the Manual, has also lots of recorded examples (!) of various modulations, as well as visuals of what they LOOK like on the spectrum display.

Last but not least, regarding Digi-modes in general, there's always the nice write-ups of Pascal on the left of G.Tuners Home Page (Information-> Digital DX, or
http://www.globaltuners.com/info/digidx

Don't miss scrolling down and checking out the "Software Link" just above the suggested frequencies for Digi-modes!

73 for now

Topic: A taste of DRM

DRM is Digital Hi-Fi usually Stereo, on Long Waves, Medium Waves and Short Waves, similar to IBOC in the Americas but has the additional benefit of Short Wave global range as opposed to IBOC.

Dorset DRM is using a good old dedicated receiver for decoding DRM and hence does not need decoding software. For the time being we don't have the drivers to intergrate the radio fully and get it to be remotely tuned, so it will be left on some frequency (see further below). Dorset DRM is sharing the same antenna system (only the HF part of it) as Dorset Radio where you will find conventional coverage from Low to Very High Frequencies.

During daytime it will be tuned to either BR-B5akt (6085 kHz), or RTL (6095) unless otherwise mentioned. During the evening hours, Medium Waves stations e.g. WDR (1593 kHz) also provide good signal to noise ratio and useable signal. Both RTL and WDR are fully Stereo!

If propagation is poor, you will notice the characteristic cut outs of digital transmissions, as is the case with Digi-TV, DAB, etc. In that case if desired sat-link can be used e.g. for RTL

You can find details of Live DRM transmitting stations, frequencies, times, antenna locations etc at http://www.drm.org/for-broadcasters/live-broadcast-schedule.

Feel free to send me a request for any of these stations (via support ticket on Dorset DRM) and I can enter any DRM station's frequency for you.

Last but not least, when I can't be over the radio to carry out the diurnal frequency changes, the radio will be left on RTL radio.

Dorset DRM can be accessed at: http://www.globaltuners.com/receiver/info.php?r=402

Hope you enjoy Global Tuners and its goodies ;)

Tim (Dorset Radio, Dorset DRM)
PS:I am aware of the slight electronic "hum"...unfortunately it originates in the server PC, hopefully if it is the soundcard, this can be fixed. However, if you move the "Balance" slider all the way to the right, you can get rid of the hum, which apparently affects the Left Channel.

Yo folks,

a bunch of friends in Russia is coding a software called "Signals Analyzer", a free demo (Linux freaks: it works fine with wine!) is available at http://signals.radioscanner.ru/info/files/item1/sa_free.rar and you'll find more information about it at their blog at http://signals-analysis.blogspot.com/

Topic: TDP, DRM to the USA

TDP will start, as of today Wednesday 10 February, to transmit DRM
programmes towards Florida and East coast of USA using TDF Montsinery
(French Guiana) SW facilities.

Programme content:

- from 1900 to 2000 UTC: "TDPradio"
- from 2000 to 2100 UTC: "The Disco Palace"

Frequency: 17755 kHz,

Power: 100 kW RMS,

Antenna: 4 / 4 at 311°,

DRM parameters:

DRM B mode
Bandwidth: 10 kHz
MSC = 64 QAM
CR = 0,6
codage : AAC + SBR.

(Source: Jacques GRUSON, F6AJW)

Obviously at such time, skip won't be open for Europe or further to the East.
Stations like Totar's, Nickstr or similar in the US may be able to check and let us know?

For anyone in the UK, interested in a stand-alone multiband radio (DRM, DAB III/L bands, FM, SW, MW, LW) radio, with multimedia recording and playback and most importantly external antenna for SW/DRM:

http://www.sateuropa.co.uk/overview.asp?catid=22&subcat=25

€ 152.25 or £ 145.00 including VAT

******Luckily for German custormers they can buy it for some £ 60 less!! *******
Check:

As usual, don't rush to buy before reading prodcut reviews.

Ha-ha enjoy Luc, hope it worked for u and u heard TDP OK !?

Miraculously, when I turned on the radio about 19.30 UTC, I managed to get a few seconds of that transmission in England, but
of course very soon 17 MHz faded away in the local night here !
Once more, this trick of receiving DRM over an unmodified PCR1000, to be found at

http://w2dtc.com/w2dtc-DRM-page.html

(this was composed over a mobile phone, so if anything was sent on IRC, I couldn't see it.)

Was at my Ham course, will try that later this week, But I already received TDPradio at your DRM receiver, this is why I know it.

They have a feed over internet, but signal is really bad in canada. for an unknow reason it doesn't use a Canadian transcontinental connection but take a route to the US and use a US transcontinental link (having 27 hope between me and the audio feed). For comparaison Globaltuners is 8 hope from me and use a Canadian Transcontinental link.
